Niccovi heavily supported for Blue Sapphire

Highly talented filly Niccovi is gaining plenty of support for her Melbourne debut in tomorrow’s Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

The Simon Miller-trained Nicconi filly opened $26 with TABtouch for the $500,000 event, but is now one of six runners in single figures at $9.50.

The three-year-old went down narrowly to Red Can Man when first-up at Belmont on September 28.

That performance came off the back of a two-year-old season where she won one of five starts and was placed in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Pinjarra.

Niccovi has drawn barrier three for the sprint

Luke Currie takes the ride on Niccovi in the feature event and said the filly was in good condition following a track gallop on Saturday morning.

“She gave me a good feel,” he told TABradio.

“She’s a very nice filly.

“I’m glad we’ve drawn low where she can just poke behind the speed.

“It gives her a chance to relax and save that energy for late.”

Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Exhilarates heads up TABtouch’s market for the Blue Sapphire at $3.90, while Brooklyn Hustle ($4.80) and Dubious ($5.50) are also right in the market.

Currie and Miller teamed up for feature race success earlier this year when Valour Road took out Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) and the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) both at Morphettville.

Niccovi also ran in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes and Group 2 Karrakatta Plate in the autumn, where she ran on strongly in both races from the back of the field to finish sixth.

Currie said barrier three gave him options whether to settle on the speed or in a midfield position.

“It looks like she’s raced on speed most of the time,” he said.

“She’s run really well when she’s ridden back.

“They’ve been good races she’s been running in in Perth.”

Fellow West Australian gallopers Pushin’ Shapes and Malibu Style are also engaged to run at the Caulfield meeting.

Pushin’ Shapes will look to repeat his first-up win at Caulfield last month when he lines up in the Group 3 Coongy Cup (2000m), where he’s rated a $16 chance.

Malibu Style is rated an $11 chance behind Zoustyle ($2.40) in the Listed Village Stakes (1200m) later in the program.
