Bunbury Cup 2021 granted standalone Saturday meeting

The Bunbury Turf Club has been granted a standalone Saturday for its two premium races next season. All roads will lead to Bunbury on Saturday 6 March 2021, when racing takes centre stage in the South West.

In a historical first, the $120,000 Furphy Bunbury Cup and $120,000 Amelia Park Bunbury Stakes will be combined to lead a stellar Super Saturday race card to be run at metropolitan prize money levels.

The Bunbury Turf Club has been lobbying for years to get this opportunity. Chief Executive Alex Doble is excited by its prospects: “what an occasion to showcase thoroughbred racing in the South West”, he said. “The South West and Bunbury support many racing participants who travel far and wide across WA year round, so for participants to have a significant event in their own backyard, it’s a great reward for what they give to industry day in, day out.”

The Bunbury Turf Club was not set to run this season because of its scheduled $17M track redevelopment, with works pushed back to April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alex comments, “in a way, it is great to be racing next season. I think everyone in the community is looking forward to getting back to some normality. Race days are great social events, and we are looking forward to when crowds are allowed back on the course. It will be a decent party!”
